ON WITH AUTUMN
The season seems to have caught up with itself now and the mild summer has morphed into Autumn without major incident in our little corner of the world. Queensland has suffered more incredible rain and who knows what impact it will have on fresh produce over the next few months but it does highlight our overall reliance on supplies from elsewhere.
It's a dilemma whether to buy into the very public discussion about price cutting in milk, meat and now eggs. What's encouraging is the issue raging in the mainstream media. My feeling is that we just need to focus on what we do well, and let the people draw their own conclusions about their own spending impact when they can't plead ignorance as reason for their complacency. The simple fact is that farmers have become price takers and farmers' markets help restore their status as price setters.
Revel in the colourful palette and fabulous flavours in the last of the tomatoes, corn, garlic, stonefruit, cucumber and berries. Rolling in for April will be fennel, citrus, quinces, persimmons, rhubarb, pumpkins, nuts and, pears to join in the bumper season already underway for apples and wild mushrooms.
