Unexpectedly, the year has started as yet another difficult one for many in the local farming community, just when things were looking so good. Once again, little towns and this time, rivers, previously unheard of by many have become household names. Farmers are a resilient bunch though who work with the vagaries of the elements far more closely than most of us do every day. Brendan Eisner from Daylesford Organics copped the trifecta of drought, fire and now flood in the last five years, but philosophically told me recently that though he didn’t even get to put his Summer crops in this year after the Spring rains, it’ll be worth it for the land in the long run, and we just have to bear with it in the short term.
